Abstract
La Universidad nace en plena Edad Media a la sombra de la Iglesia y en condición de servidumbre (ancilla theologiae), respecto de la teología cristiana, pero se desarrolla y consolida adquiriendo su propia autonomía e independencia. A partir de El Renacimiento, la propia Universidad habrá de mantener esta misma independencia y autonomía respecto de los Estados nacionales y los poderes políticos. En la moderna sociedad de Mercado el serio desafío que enfrenta la Universidad consiste en cómo seguir desarrollándose y modernizándose, conservando su tradicional autonomía científica y académica sin someterse a las lógicas de la mercancía y fuerzas del Mercado.
